Major Work Highlights of Chemical testing:

  • A. Inhouse water samples of BMC:
    The laboratory test food and water samples sent by the Public Health Department, BMC Hospitals and Maternity Homes, cemetery, swimming pool, other department of BMC like Zoo, gardens, Ward office etc.
    Analysis of Mid-Day Meal for Calorific value and Nutrition value supplied to the Eeducation Ddepartment of Municipal Corporation under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) by various agencies and NGOs.
  • B. External samples :
    The laboratory tests the following External Food and water samples:
    Samples submitted by general public or customer, Regulatory samples under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 submitted by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Central Railway, Western Railway and Kokan Railway, Police station, Central and State and Government Office etc. for testing compliance with the standards prescribed in Food Safety & Standards Regulation and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
    Cigarettes samples sent by the Office of the Commissioner of Customs.
    Food articles/products sent by the various Police stations of Mumbai.
    Prohibited Articles like Gutkha & flavoured Tobacco sent by the Crime Branch of Police Department collected by Raids, Illegal Store etc.
    Soap and detergent samples sent by Central Purchase Department (CPD) as per BIS standards.
  • C. Projects of Laboratory:
    FSSAI Project of fixing the limit of Iron Filling in Tea powder :(2013)
    The laboratory has contributed to a project initiated by FSSAI for fixing the limit of Iron Filling present in Tea Powder. In accordance with it the laboratory had collected various samples of tea powder from Mumbai region and carried out Chemical Analysis to determine the content of Iron Filling (in ppm). The test results were submitted to the FSSAI, which were used for standardizing the limit of Iron Filling present in Tea Powder. These prescribed limits were later published in the Food safety and standard (Food product and Food additive) Regulation.

  • Mid day Meal Standardization Project: (2015) :(2013)
    A joint project was initiated by Municipal Laboratory, BMC Education Department and ISKON. The laboratory contributed in standardizing the limit for Minimum Requirement of Protein and Calorific Value of the Mid day meal (Khichadi) served to school children under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). In this project the khichadi was prepared in laboratory from raw ingredients as per the guidelines of Government of Maharashtra and Chemical analysis of the cooked khichadi was carried out determine the Protein Content and Nutrition value. This Analysis Report was submitted to the Government of Maharashtra to revise the standard of Mid-day meal (Khichadi), considering this a Government Resolution (GR) of revised limits was published.
